# What is an agent-native cloud?

An agent-native cloud is infrastructure a coding agent can sign up for, deploy to and operate without a person in the loop. The six properties that define one, and how today's platforms measure up.

## The short version

An agent-native cloud is hosting that a coding agent can use end to end without a person: it can create its own account, deploy with a command that returns a machine-readable result, read failures it can act on, and stay inside a spending cap. Ample is built this way; several platforms now have some of the pieces.

Most clouds were designed for a person at a dashboard. Coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex and Cursor now write a large share of new apps, and they get stuck at exactly the steps that assume a person: signing up in a browser, clicking through a project wizard, reading a red banner, noticing a bill.

An agent-native cloud removes those steps. Six properties define it.

## The six properties

1. **The agent can get its own credentials.** No browser, CAPTCHA or card for a first deploy. A person can claim the account later.
2. **Deploy is one synchronous command.** It waits until the app is live or failed and returns JSON and an exit code, so the agent never polls or guesses.
3. **Failures say who must act and how to fix it.** "Build failed" is not enough; the agent needs the diagnosis, the evidence and a suggested fix, and to know whether the problem is in the app or the platform.
4. **The platform provisions what the code needs.** If the code reads `DATABASE_URL`, a database appears and the connection string is passed in.
5. **Spending stops at a cap.** An agent can loop. A hard limit turns that into a paused app, not a bill.
6. **Every action is available to agents.** A CLI, an MCP server and an API with the same capabilities, plus documentation an agent can read (llms.txt, Markdown pages, AGENTS.md).

## How platforms measure up (October 2026)

| Property | Ample | Railway | Vercel | Render | Fly.io |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Agent gets its own account | Yes (`ample auth signup`) | Temporary VM with no account (`ssh railway.new`); `railway up` needs a person to approve signup | No | No | No |
| Synchronous deploy with a machine-readable result | Yes (exit 0 live, 1 failed, 2 needs input) | CLI deploys | CLI deploys | CLI and MCP deploys | flyctl deploys |
| Failures with owner, diagnosis and fix | Yes | Logs | Logs | Logs and metrics | Logs |
| Database created from the code's needs | Yes | Templates | Marketplace partners | You create it | You create it |
| Hard spending cap | On by default on Free | Optional hard limit | Optional pause on Pro | Not for compute | None |
| MCP server | Remote and local | Remote and local | Remote, approved clients | Remote | Local, experimental |

## Why it matters

Others are adding pieces too: Cloudflare's `wrangler deploy --temporary` gives an agent a Worker for 60 minutes before a person claims it ([Cloudflare changelog](https://developers.cloudflare.com/changelog/post/2026-06-19-temporary-accounts-for-agents/)), and Google Cloud made hard spend caps available for Cloud Run on October 13, 2026 ([Google Cloud docs](https://docs.cloud.google.com/billing/docs/how-to/budgets-spend-caps)).

When an agent can finish the job, the person who asked for the app gets a URL instead of a list of steps. When it cannot, the work stops at the first browser window. The platforms above are converging on these properties; the difference today is how many of them work without a person.

## Try it

```sh
curl -fsSL https://get.ample.computer/install.sh | sh
ample auth signup
ample plan --write && ample up
```
